“She was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the LORD and wept in anguish. Then she made a vow and said, ‘O LORD of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head.’” – 1 Samuel 1:7-11 NKJV
There are different kinds of prayer. Some are polite and casual. Some are spoken out of habit or obligation. However, some prayers are serious and intense. Some are desperate prayers, Hannah’s prayer was like this.
She was desperate. She wanted to bear children, but remained barren. But nothing changed until she took her situation to God. In fact, she prayed (v. 13) with such intensity that Eli “thought she was drunk.”
Hannah was determined to get an answer, and was so committed that she did not care what others thought or said. As a result, she received her answer. In the process, she showed us that God honors those who are persistent and seek Him with fervor and intensity.
In our lives, God watches us. He examines what we say and do. He listens to our prayers. And He evaluates just how much we believe Him. And how serious we are about the needs we face. If we are content with our situation, and not really serious, perhaps He will wait to act.
But the Bible teaches that God rewards those who are seriously, totally committed to Him, who are so focused on Him that they do not care what others may say, and are willing to put everything on the line to get an answer.
Right now, remember that God is looking at your heart. Are you serious about receiving His answers and solving your problems? Let Him know how serious you are, and how much you really want His answer. Are you at the point of sending up a desperate prayer to God?
Father, I need You. I want Your answers to the problems I face. I cry out to You, and believe that You will answer my prayers. Thank You! In Jesus’ name. Amen.
